I was thrilled to see four of my pillows in the new book Dealer's Choice by my friend Craig Kellogg. The photography and quality of the book are amazing, and the subject -- the homes of furniture dealers from around the world -- is very interesting. Dealer's Choice is available for purchase here.

Artek's 75th Anniversary

Mon May 23, 2011

This month's Metropolis magazine has an interesting article about the Finnish company Artek, which is celebrating their 75th anniversary this year. In 2008 we collaborated with Artek to produce a limited edition of Alvar Aalto's iconic Stool 60 with Judy Ross Textiles' chainstitch embroidery. A few of these are still available in the furniture section of our website.

Earlier this year we made a custom cover for an Artek daybed, also originally designed by Alvar Aalto. The cover is linen with rayon embroidery in the Fauna pattern. Click here for more of our custom projects.

Dal Lake, Kashmir in 1989

Mon April 18, 2011

I just found this beautiful black and white photograph from 1989. I took it while I was in a shikara boat going to work. It is the Dal Lake in Srinagar, Kashmir. The mountains in the background are the Himalaya Mountains. It must be springtime there too!

Judy Ross's trip to Mexico

Tue April 12, 2011

Mexico was so inspirational for color. All the buildings are painted in rich vibrant colors. Also the signage is many times a beautiful naive drawing.

Merida, where we stayed is a quaint colonial town. We spent hours walking around the streets, looking at the beautiful painted houses. We also visited many artisanal shops and bought lots of colorful Yucatan crafts. I especially loved all the straw accessories in great colors .

We visited the Mayan ruins at Uxmal. We spent hours walking around and climbing the temples and houses. It is amazing to think this was built by hand around 1200 years ago.

Thu April 7, 2011

My longtime friend Laurie Simmons recently had a show at the newly completed Bowery location of Salon 94 in New York. She has always collected my pillows as I collected her work. This exhibition, "The Love Doll: Days 1-30," included a photo that features my Lattice pillow in cream/black. The show just ended, but you can see more of Laurie Simmons' work at www.lauriesimmons.net.

Apartment Therapy Meetup

Fri January 14, 2011

One of Judy’s favorite blogs is Apartment Therapy. Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, the founder of the blog, has been a strong supporter of Judy Ross Textiles since he launched the blog. This photo was taken after their January Design Meetup. The theme for the evening was “Design and Motherhood: How to Make it Work.” It was especially fun for Judy to be on the panel with Sandy Chilewich, who she has known for many years.

Judy Ross' Trip To India With Her Two Boys

Thu April 29, 2010

Judy and her sons in an Antique Automobile at Gem Palace

In April 2010, Judy went on a business trip to India. Combining business with pleasure, Judy took her two sons, Gabriel and Henri, to visit her manufacturers and spend some time sight-seeing. They visited Jaipur and spent some time with Munnu Kasawail at his world-renowned shop, Gem Palace. Judy got to look at the most exquisite jewels and the boys enjoyed Munnu’s antique car collection.

A trip to the Taj Mahal was a must. The boys were really excited to see one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Now they only have 6 more to see!

Project with Lycee Francais Second Grade Class

Mon March 1, 2010

Judy created these gorgeous scarves with her son Henri's 2nd grade class at the Lycee Francais in New York. The class had been studying the work of Picasso, and the children were asked to draw their own interpretation of Picasso’s style.  All of their drawings were sent to Judy’s artisans in Kashmir and the children’s line drawings were embroidered onto charcoal grey scarves.

The class came to Judy’s studio to see a designer in action. They not only learned about the traditions and crafts of India, but they each later received a beautiful scarf with their design to treasure forever. Judy Ross also presented the teacher with a scarf featuring a miniature version of each of the sketches of the children of the class.
